Twitter is a waste of time if you don’t know what you’re doing. I’ve been looking at various blogposts and ebooks for sometime now and they all seem to repeat the common mistakes which often seem to be ’shortcuts’ to traffic building. Some of the common mistakes are:
- Automated follow programs. Some smart people just put bots on duty to auto follow others. But as in case of real friends, quantity doesn’t matter, quality does. So make sure you follow only leaders in your niche, interact with them on a human level in a human understandable, language (No I can has cheese or I lyk ur post very mch). Build a rapport with other users. The thumb rule is if the leaders notice you, then the world notices you.
- Following everyone. And then un-following people who do not reciprocate. At the end of this cycle, you might have a huge follower base, but these are most often people who follow any Tom, Dick or Harry. So them following you doesn’t make much of a difference, they have so much on their Twitter dashboards, they wont even read what you tweet, so this is a complete waste of time.
- Mixing business and social life. No wants to know you’re milk intolerant. Or which girl you’re seeing. Don’t miss your business and social life. If you’re using twitter for your online business, remain focussed. The other side of this issue is you should tweet about only one niche, you cannot be an expert of 36 hot selling keywords. You will only end up being Jack of all trades, Master of none.
Those were the three most common mistakes. I’ll follow up with a post on Twitter tips and tricks.

I received a comment on facebook about point (one) being invalid saying twitter has blacklisted the bots. But trust me its not the case. The bots are programmed keeping Twitter API in my mind. And you can grant access to these apps from your Twitter setting and/or revoke the access.
The other objection was that twitter can not be used for traffic / revenue generation. Completely wrong. Have a look at one of the popular webmaster forums (Digital Poiint / Sitpoint etc) and you will understand how big a profit opportunity twitter presents, at this stage, the opportunity is HUGE with the kind of alexa rank that twitter has.
The last objection was “tweet only about one niche = false!!”. Trust me friend, you can not be an expert on 19 different niches, Mozilla and Jay Freeman are established brands, they can tweet about anything and still get traffic. Heck, they’ll get traffic without tweeting. But if you’re establishing yourself via Twitter, you have to concenterate on one niche, just ONE…. Read more
